Mattigan’s mother left his father when he was four. He did not know the reason for this as his father never talked about it. He and his father moved into the woods and his father became a forester.
When Mattigan was 15, war broke out in his homeland. The rightful king, Prince Culiet, had been exiled by the royal advisor Grimward upon the King’s death. Grimward lied that the king was both illegitmate and a traitor, and put a compliant puppet king Morslade on the throne. Now the rightful prince was mounting a campaign to reclaim the throne.
Mattigan’s father Giltgurd was known to support the prince. Mattigan and Giltgurd returned from cutting wood one day and the cabin was engulfed in flames. As they were retrieving what belongings they could, a local pig farmer collapsed on the ground out of breath, having run several miles. He stared in shock at the smoldering ruins of the cabin. He said that the sheriff was looking for Giltgurd and, now seeing the cabin, it was obvious that this information was now more dire. Giltgurd thought for a moment and then told Mattigan to go join the prince, there is no living in peace under this impostor king. Giltgurd would hide in the forest as he was not now fit for battle.
Mattigan answered the Prince’s call and joined service as an archer. Mattigan fought bravely, and was known in his Bow Unit as the finest marksman. However, the battle was lost, and the prince was killed in the carnage. All soldiers in the battle supporting the prince were declared traitors, and Mattigan fled for his life.
When he returned to the site of the cabin, he found that in the midst of the ruins, his father’s head was stuck on a spike, with a note tacked into it which read: Traitor. Fighting back tears, he turned left his home forever. On his way out he saw Rolf Hoggett’s head also defiled on a spike. King Morslade now rules Mattigan’s homeland with no compassion, and Mattigan is an exile from the country in which he was raised.
